A Dog's Life: The Autobiography of a Stray is a children's novel written in 2005 past Ann M. Martin and is published past Scholastic Books. The target audition for this book is grades four-vii. It is written from the offset-person perspective of a female devious domestic dog named Squirrel. Ann Grand. Martin bases her books on personal experiences and contemporary problems or events.[1]

Martin is a children's writer from Princeton, New Jersey. All of the characters in her books are fictional, although some are based on real people.[two] Martin has written many popular children's titles including The Baby-sitters Club series and the California Diaries series.[3] Her book A Corner of the Universe, received a Newbery Honor Award.[iv] She had since written a sequel chosen "Everything For A Canis familiaris" that was published in 2011.

Squirrel is a mixed-breed domestic dog who lives in a shed behind the summer domicile of a wealthy family, at that place, she lives with her female parent, Stream, and brother, Bone. Squirrel and Bone were the but 2 puppies to survive out of a litter of 5. While living in the shed, Their mother teaches Squirrel and Bone how to hunt and find food, as well as to avert being seen by humans. When Stream disappears of a sudden, Squirrel and Os set out on their own. Bone is very adventurous and Squirrel follows him through the wood and from town to town in search of food and shelter. The puppies are eventually picked up past highway travelers named Marcy and George who consider adopting them. They have them domicile for the nighttime before George decides not to go on the dogs and throws them out of a car window in a mall parking lot. Squirrel and Bone are injured and Os is taken away by other shoppers immediately after beingness tossed from the car, leaving Squirrel solitary. Squirrel and Bone never see each other once again.

Alone and hungry, Squirrel meets another female person stray, Moon, by the road. The two dogs became fast friends together for warmth and searching for food in garbage cans and trash in the forest.

One day, a truck hits Moon and kills her. An animal across the road made them run and scared squirrel. They were trying to get to the other side. Squirrel and Moon are taken to the vet by the family unit who hitting them. There, the veterinarian announces that Moon died, and Squirrel's leg is cleaved past the truck. Squirrel is past herself, again. Squirrel is spayed and her broken leg is treated. She is renamed Daisy and is adopted by the family for the summer. Squirrel lives in the garage and plays with the family's children every twenty-four hour period. In the autumn, the family unit leaves their summer abode and Squirrel is abandoned. She wanders for years until she finds herself dorsum at the mall parking lot where she and Bone were separated. Squirrel follows a smell that reminds her of Os through the woods, only she does non find him.

Squirrel, now an onetime dog, takes encompass from the weather in a shed in the back yard of an old woman named Susan. Squirrel tries to gain Susan's trust. Susan also tries to gain Squirrel'south trust by leaving food out and feeding Squirrel on the porch earlier Susan tries to coax Squirrel in when the conditions turns common cold. Susan had a dog named Maxie in the past, so she knew how to take care of dogs. When she finally gets Squirrel inside, Susan decides to go on her and renames her "Addie." Susan and Squirrel spend their days running errands in town and cuddling upwardly on the couch. The ii spend the rest of their lives together.

Squirrel/Daisy/Addie [edit]

Squirrel is the protagonist of the book, and it is written from her point of view. She is a female stray puppy who is one of two surviving puppies in a litter of five. Squirrel enjoys hunting, a skill which she learned from her female parent. After her mother goes missing, Squirrel moves from place to place following her brother Bone, and and so later with her new friend Moon, earlier she ventures by herself in her erstwhile age, longing for a companion. Squirrel has many tragic events happen in her life, but in the finish everything turns out to be okay.

Os [edit]

Bone is the brother of Squirrel. He is a male stray puppy who is ane of ii surviving puppies in a litter of five. Later his mother disappears, Bone leads Squirrel from place to identify. He was separated from his sis Squirrel when George threw both of them out of the car window. He has a pretty rough attitude and is very protective of his sis.

Stream [edit]

Stream is the mother of Squirrel and Bone. She cares for her puppies in a bicycle burrow in an old shed until they are strong plenty to hazard themselves. She teaches them to exist enlightened of humans and how to chase. She leaves the shed i morning and does not render.

Mine [edit]

Mine is a play a joke on who lived underneath the Merrion'south new garden shed and had 4 kits. The play tricks was the enemy of the animals living on the property because she was dangerous. She is killed when the Merrion patriarch shoots her.

Matthias Merrion [edit]

The youngest son of the family unit who endemic the shed that Stream, Bone and Squirrel lived in. Matthias discovered Squirrel and Bone but kept the dogs a hush-hush from his family unit. Matthias brought the dogs scraps of food and toys to play with. Matthias was the dogs' first homo interaction.

Yellow Human being [edit]

A cat who lived in the shed with the dogs. The cats lived in nesting boxes in the reverse corner of the shed from the dogs. Xanthous Man greeted the dogs every morning and was curious of them.

Marcy [edit]

The wife of George. She and George notice Squirrel and Bone on the side of the highway and take them home. Marcy wants to continue the dogs, and George doesn't allow her to. Marcy feeds them and cleans upwards their messes, hoping that they will get tame pets.

George [edit]

The husband of Marcy. He and Marcy discover Squirrel and Bone on the side of the highway and take them home. George doesn't call back that the dogs are worth the problem. When Marcy leaves for work, George throws them out the car window at the mall and injures them both.

Moon [edit]

A female person stray that Squirrel makes friends with afterward Os disappears. Moon was a modest canis familiaris, who resembled Bone. Moon and Squirrel took turns caring for each other when they were hurt. Moon is described equally being dauntless, adventurous, and loving. Moon and Squirrel travel together from town to town for years, sneaking garbage at nighttime and fighting other dogs when necessary. Moon's best friend was Squirrel. When Moon is killed by the Becker's motorcar when crossing the route, Squirrel is very deplorable.

Dr. Roth [edit]

A veterinary who looks after Moon and Squirrel when they are brought into the vet by the Becker family unit. Squirrel remembers Dr. Roth as having gentle hands. Dr. Roth donates her time to gear up Squirrel's broken leg, spay her, and give her shots. She too gives Squirrel a clean beak of health before she is taken in past her new family.

Rachael [edit]

An employee at the vet clinic that Moon and Squirrel are brought to. Rachael helped nurse Squirrel dorsum to wellness by taking her for walks and caring for her. She was very deplorable to run into Squirrel leave with the Becker family.

Becker family unit [edit]

The Becker family consists of Margery, Donald, and their parents. They ran over Moon and Squirrel on the route. They brought both dogs into the vet, where Moon was pronounced expressionless and Squirrel was treated for her injuries. The Beckers came and checked on Squirrel oftentimes while at the vet and ended up adopting her when her leg had healed. They provided Squirrel with a warm bed in their garage for the summer before abandoning her in autumn. They name Squirrel "Daisy" and forget to feed her constantly.

Susan McGrath [edit]

Susan is a kind-hearted old lady and puts nutrient out for Squirrel 3 times a mean solar day on her porch until the weather turns common cold, after which she invites Squirrel in to her habitation to warm up. Susan adopts Squirrel, gets her checked by the vet, and they become close companions. Susan and Squirrel do everything together from then on, and alive happily together in Susan'due south home until the end of the volume. She renamed Squirrel " Addie". Susan is a very caring woman.

The Stray Dogs [edit]

The stray dogs are dogs who notice Moon and Squirrel in the streets and badly hurt them.

Miss Oliver [edit]

She was trying to convince Susan McGrath to sell her house and become rid of Squirrel/Daisy/Addy.

Reception [edit]

A Kirkus Reviews review says, "Middle-wrenching besides as heart-warming".[v] A Publishers Weekly review says, "Though Martin is sometimes inconsistent about what Squirrel does and does not know, listeners will be also hooked on the emotional notes and occasional dramatic moments here to mind."[6] This book won the Young Readers Choice Award in 2008.[1]
